AAAA Aircraft Categories
The Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia (AAAA) recognises four separate categories of historical aircraft, all of which have a strong following around Australia and represents many of the aircraft owned, restored and flown by our members. These categories are also used for judging purposes at our major events.
They are: Antique, Classic, Contemporary and Warbird and are defined below:
AntiqueAn aircraft where first of type was in production on or before August 31, 1945 and including subsequent postwar design variations maintaining the characteristics of the original design. Examples: Beechcraft Staggerwing, Fairchild 24, Tiger Moth and Austers. |
ClassicAn aircraft where first of type was in production on or after September 1, 1945, up to and including December 31, 1955. |
ContemporaryAn aircraft where first of type was in production after January 1, 1956, up to and including December 31, 1970. |
WarbirdEncompassing all aircraft previously operated by the military forces of any country. |
